Holcim cuts growth targets as net profit falls
AFP via Yahoo (August 21, 2008) - Swiss cement group Holcim on Thursday posted a sharp drop in net profit and cut its growth targets for this year, as higher energy prices and the slowing global economy impact on sales. It said its group net profit fell 53.2 percent to 1.338 billion Swiss francs (1.2 billion dollars, 826 million euros) while net profit attributable to shareholders fell 56 percent to 1.066 billion francs.

Pro-Business Alliance Puts Muscle Into Major Federal Infrastructure Spending
ForConstructionPros.com (August 21, 2008) - An organization that includes a powerful Washington pro-business group is calling for a new economic stimulus package aimed at improving U.S. roadways and other infrastructure. The effort, the alliance says, could create 750,000 American jobs nationally in three months.

Cemex to seek arbitration over Venezuelan assets
International Construction (August 21, 2008) - Cemex says it will submit a complaint to the World Bank's Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes following the Venezuelan Government's seizure of its assets in the country. The company says it has been deprived of its rights under both national and international law by the expropriation that took place earlier this week as part of president Hugo Chavez's programme of nationalisation of key industries.

CEMEX acknowledges implementation of nationalization decree in Venezuela
CEMEX (August 18, 2008) - CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V. announced today that, according to a press release issued by Petroleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA), PDVSA will proceed to take operational control of the plants of CEMEX Venezuela on Monday, August 18, 2008, on behalf of the Government of Venezuela.

Murray: Highway Trust Fund in Fiscal Peril
Construction Equipment (August 6, 2008) - The Federal Highway Trust Fund, which provides one-third of the funding states use to build highways and bridges, faces bankruptcy next year unless the current Congress acts to shore it up, Sen. Patty Murray told a state labor convention in Vancouver, WA Tuesday. Murray, D-Wash., chairs the Senate transportation appropriations subcommittee, which writes the federal transportation budget.

Bay State Authorizes Billions in Construction, Bridge Projects
ENR (August 12, 2008) - Massachusetts Governor Deval L. Patrick (D) signed into law the first week of August three bills allocating over $5 billion for construction. One bill would earmark $3-billion for accelerated bridge repair and replacement targeting about 250-to-300 of the state's 543 structurally deficient bridges.

CEMEX explores sale of its Australian concrete pipes and products assets
CEMEX (August 6, 2008) - CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V. announced today that it is exploring the sale of certain assets in Australia. The proceeds from the potential asset sale will be used for debt reduction. The assets being considered for sale operate under the Humes brand name and consist of 16 concrete pipes and products manufacturing facilities located throughout Australia. Humes sold over 580,000 tonnes of product in 2007, generating revenues of approximately A$255 million (US$234 million).

Vulcan announces 2nd quarter results
Vulcan Materials (August 5, 2008) - Vulcan Materials Company today announced second quarter net sales of $966 million, as compared to $808 million in the second quarter of 2007. Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization (EBITDA) were $339 million in the second quarter of 2008, as compared to $281 million in the prior year. Operating earnings were $238 million in the second quarter of 2008 versus $217 million in the prior year.
